People of destiny; Americans as I saw them at home and abroad Philip Gibbs 9781177196017 Books

Sir Philip Gibbs was a gifted writer who could take anyone to a time, place or event, by his mere words, even when written a century ago. This books gives Gibbs account of the American's (and the America) he met when touring the country on a speaking tour after the Great War. He delves into the politics and discussions of the day, taking place not only in America, but also in Europe. This book has a very somber undertone as more than once Sir Gibbs pointed out how the actions of a few politicians were laying the seeds for another great conflict, which of course we all know started only twenty years later in 1939.

This book also provides a facinating view into the America that was (isolationists not concerned with World politics or military spending) and how the seeds for what we have become (most unfortunately) over the past century. The world is a very different place now, but one has to wonder what it would be today if people used a bit more logic instead of raw vengeful emotion after the first World War. If we had rebuilt a new society, the Nazi's would have never risen as the German's (who fought in WWI) did not want more war which only made the military industrial establishment rich at the cost of millions of lives.
